General Notes:
In 1851 Margaret Hammill was the wife of an ironstone miner living with three children in 56 Front Street, Newton, in the parish of Bo'ness in Linlithgowshire. She was born in Ireland and her recorded age in 1851 was 35 years.
In 1861 Margaret was resident, with six of her children and her husband John, at 107 Marshall Street Wishaw. Her age in this census entry was noted as 42 years, and her birthplace as Ireland.
APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF
In 1862 an Application for Poor Relief was made to the Parish of Cambusnethan by Margaret McKie or Hamill, from her residence at Charlotte Square, Stane. The application was made on 8 July 1862 at 11 am and the subsequent Inspector's visit took place on the same day at 5 pm.
Margaret's birthplace was noted as County Antrim in Ireland. She was able bodied, and the average weekly earnings of the household were unknown. Her husband, John Hamill, had deserted her seven weeks earlier.
She had 4 children dependant on her: Catherine Hamill aged 11 years James Hamill aged 9 years Hugh Hamill aged 7 years Mary Ann Hamill aged 3 years
Her son Patrick, aged 14 years, lived at home and worked in the pit. Margaret, aged 17 years, was a servant in Port Glasgow. John, aged 18 years, was a miner but disabled. Bridget, aged 22 years, was in America.
The Application resulted in a relief payment of 2/- and the offer of the Poorhouse.
The 1871 census for Holytown recorded Margaret Hamil, and four of her children, living at Biggar Road, in the hamlet of Rowentree, Lanarkshire. Margaret was a 'widow' aged 50 years, and had been born in Ireland.
In 1881 Margaret was a widow living in Bo'ness Road in the parish of Bothwell. The census recorded her age as 64 years, and that she had been born in Ireland. Her son, James, was living with her.
Margaret died in 1882, a widow aged 65 years. Both of her parents were deceased.
Margaret was dead when her son James married Rose McAvoy in 1883. 2

MONEY
2/- = 2 SHILLINGS Before decimalization in Britain 2/- represented one tenth of a pound sterling. In 1862 it would have been equal to one and a half days' pay for Patrick, and six days' pay for Mary.
STANE Stane is a small hamlet in North Lanarkshire. It lies to the south east of Shotts and three miles south west of Fauldhouse.

James Hamill, Margaret's son, who had been present where his mother died, informed the registrar of his mother's death in 1882.
