In the census of 1851 for Borrowstouness in Linlithgowshire, Patrick was not included in the family entry, but he was included 10 years later in the 1861 entry for the family who were then living in Cambusnethan parish in Lanarkshire.




The 1861 census for Cambusnethan recorded Patrick, aged 14 years, living in his family home and working as a coal miner. His birthplace was noted as Airdrie.




Patrick's mother's application for Poor Relief in 1862 stated he was aged 14 years, a miner, and living at home.




The 1871 census for Holytown recorded Patrick, aged 22 years, living at his mother's home. He was a coal miner and had been born in Airdrie.




In 1896 Patrick's brother, James, died. Patrick was the informant of his death, before the registrar, in March 1896, and made his X mark.
