The 1851 census for Borrowstouness (Bo'ness) in Linlithgowshire recorded John and Margaret Hammill and their three children living at 56 Front Street, Newton. John, head of the household, was recorded as a 36 year old ironstone miner, born in Ireland.
In 1861 John and Margaret Hamil were resident at 107 Marshall Street in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, according to the census of that year. Four sons and two daughters completed their family entry. John, a coal miner, was recorded as aged 51 years and had been born in Ireland. His daughters, Bridget and Margaret, were not included in this entry.
In 1862, Poor Law records for Cambusnethan parish recorded that John deserted his wife in May 1862.
In the death certificate of Margaret McKee, John's widow, in 1882, his occupation was recorded as coal miner.
John was a coal miner, according to the details given in his son, James' marriage certificate in August 1883. John was dead by then. This same information was given at the marriage with Mary O'Rorke in 1890.
In 1896, John's son, James, died. In his son's death certificate, John was recorded as 'John Hamill coal miner deceased'. 2 4 5

John married Margaret McKEE on 11 February 1839 in St Patrick's Church, Loughguile Parish, County Antrim, Ireland.1 (Margaret McKEE was born about 1818 in Templepatrick, County Antrim, Ireland, died 13 April 1882 at 12.30 pm in Ferguson's Land, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland and was buried on 17 April 1882 in Section 68 B, St Joseph's Cemetery, Dalbeth, Glasgow, Scotland.). The cause of her death was bronchitis over 8 days.
