The 1861 census for Cambusnethan recorded James living at 107 Marshall Street, Wishaw, with his family. At 8 years of age, he was the third youngest child in the family. His birthplace was noted as Airdrie.




In 1862, Poor Law records stated that James was dependant on his mother and aged 9 years.




In 1871, the census recorded James living at his mother's home. His recorded age was 16 years and he was a coal miner. He had been born in Airdrie.




In 1881, James Hammill was recorded by the census living with his widowed mother in Bo'ness Road in Bothwell parish. His recorded age was 24 years and he had been born in Airdrie.




James' first wife, Rose, died in 1884 at the early age of 30 years.




When his son, John, was born in 1890, it was James, who had been present where the birth took place, who notified the registrar at Holytown, William Richard, on 6 August 1890, and signed the register. He was recorded then as a coal miner.




The 1891 census recorded James Hammil was a 'coalminer', aged 35 years, and married to Mary O'Rourke. They lived in 133 Briggate, Chapelhall, with one child of their own, and Mary's four children by her first husband James McGonegal. James Hammil was recorded as born in Bothwell parish.




James Hamill, who had been present where the child's death occurred, notified the authorities of his son, Patrick's birth on 31 May 1892. He signed the register before William Richard, registrar, at Holytown on 20 June 1892.




In 1894 James, who was present where the birth occurred, notified the registrar at Holytown of the birth of his third son, Hugh, on 8 November 1894.




James died in 1896 at the recorded age of 40 years. He had been twice married and his occupation was coal miner. His usual residence was at Chapelhall, Airdrie. The RCE recorded his place of residence as 'Torryglen Chapelhall'.




In 1967 James' son, Hugh, died. James was recorded in Hugh's death certificate as 'James Hamill, coal miner, deceased'. ^{4 6 7}

THOMAS SMITH

Thomas was a witness at the marriage of James Hamill to Rose McAvoy. A likely candidate may be Thomas Smith, son of Alexander Smith and Elizabeth Hamil, born 29 July 1863 in New Monkland parish.

  Medical Notes:

Patrick Hamill, brother of James, notified the registrar of James' death and made his X mark.

As well as the normal death certificate, an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries referred to James' death. There the cause of death was 'Lockjaw- the result of injuries received by falling on the road at Chapelhall'. James' residence was recorded there as 'Torryglen Chapelhall'.

James married Rose McEVOY, daughter of Daniel McEVOY and Bridget McEVOY, on 30 August 1883 in Chapelhall, Holytown district, Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.¹ (Rose McEVOY was born in 1854, baptised on 18 May 1854 in Hilltown, Clonduff, County Down, Ireland ⁸ and died 18 August 1884 at 11 pm in Briggate, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was phtisis over 9 months.

  Marriage Notes:

James was aged 29, resided at High Rows Chapelhall and worked as a coal miner. Both of his parents were dead.

Rose was aged 28 and worked as a domestic servant. She too was living at High Rows. Her father was still alive but her mother had died.

Fr Hubert van Stiphout was the priest who married the couple according to the forms and rites of the Roman Catholic Church. The witnesses were Thomas Smith and Mary Hamill. Rose made her X mark. The marrigae was registered at Holytown on September 3rd 1883 by William Richard, registrar. ¹

James next married Mary ROURKE, daughter of Francis ROURKE (DNA Linked) and Margaret CAMPBELL (DNA Linked), on 9 June 1890 in RC Chapel, Chapelhall, Lanarkshire, Scotland.^{2 3} (Mary ROURKE was baptised on 7 May 1855 in Dungannon RC parish, County Tyrone, Ireland ⁹ and died on 1 February 1917 in Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland ¹⁰.). The cause of her death was burning injuries sustained for five days.

The marriage was solemnised, after banns, according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. Bridget McLaughlin and Elizabeth Yates were witnesses to the marriage, the celebrant of which was Father Hubert van Stiphout, the Roman Catholic priest in Chapelhall.

James Hamill was a widower of 36 years when he married Mary Rorke. He was a coal miner and lived at Briggate, Chapelhall.

Mary Rorke was 34 years old and a widow. She made her X mark. No occupation was noted for her.

All four of their parents were deceased.

The marriage was registered at Holytown in June 1890, William Richard being the registrar. ^{2 3}
