Hugh's father, James, who had been present where his son was born, notified the registrar at Holytown of his birth.




Hugh was the youngest of his family living at Bo'ness Road Chapelhall in 1901, according to the census. He was aged 6 years. He was a scholar and had been born in Chapelhall.




In 1911 Hugh Hammill was recorded by the census living with his mother and brother and their two half-brothers in Main Street Chapelhall. He was 16 years old and single, born in Bothwell parish Lanarkshire. He worked as a "Colliery Horse Keeper" below ground.




Hugh died in 1967 in hospital at the recorded age of 72 years. His usual residence then was 65 George Street, Chapelhall. He had remained single and was a retired brick worker. ²
