John worked as a coal miner, according to the 1861 census entry for his family in Cambusnethan parish. His birthplace was noted as Airdrie, and his age as 16 years. He was the eldest child living in the family.

Poor Law records of 1862 recorded that John, aged 18 years, was a miner and disabled.
