   Cause of her death was myocardial degeneration and cardiac failure.4

Margaret Quigley was the younger twin of her brother, Peter Quigley. Her father, Peter Quigley, notified the registrar of their birth on 23 April 1866. He was recorded as a coal miner. In this document Peter Quigley, the informant appears to have signed his name, whereas elsewhere he makes and X mark.

Note: The date of birth here is noted as 5th April whereas the birth certificate records it as 10th of April.

The 1871 census for Galston Ayrshire, where Margaret Tweedley had been born, and registered as Margaret Quigley, recorded her living in Knowehead Rows with her family, and aged 5 years.

"Margt Quigley" was living at 22 Dalziel Street, Motherwell, when recorded in the 1881 census. She was aged 15 years, and employed as a general servant. Her birthplace was Galston, Ayrshire.

Margaret married in 1889.

In 1890 Margaret's daughter, Margaret George Gebbie, was born, and named after Margaret's own mother. The parents of the child were recorded as James Gebbie and Margaret Tweedley, and their date and place of marriage as 8 November 1889, Hamilton.

In 1891 she was recorded by the census living at 3 Burnblea Street, Hamilton with her husband and small daughter. This was fairly close to her husband's large family. Margaret's age was noted as 24 years. She was living in a house with one windowed room.

In 1901 the family were no longer at that address, although they were entered in the census for Hamilton. They lived at 17 Moore Street Hamilton. James was recorded as aged 35 years, and Margaret as 34 years. Four children were listed: Margaret, aged 11 years, Lizzie, aged 9 years, Andrew aged 5 years, and Bella, under a year old. Margaret's mother, Margaret Tweedley, lived with them.

In 1911 the census recorded Margaret Gebbie living at 14 Moore Street in Hamilton with her husband and six children aged from 21 to 3 years. Margaret was born in Galston, Ayrshire, and was 45 years old. She had been married for 21 years and had had nine children born alive of whom 7 were still living.

Margaret Gebbie died in 1942. her death certificate recorded her as "Widow of James Gebbie Coal Miner" and aged 75 years. She would have been 76 years old had she lived one more day. Both of her parents were deceased.

When Margaret's daughter, Elizabeth, died in 1985, her death certificate recorded her mother as 'Margaret Gebbie MS Tweedley deceased'. 2 3 4 6 8 12 16 17 18

The informant was James Gebbie, Margaret's son, who was present where the death occurred.

The death was registered before James Frame, registrar, at Hamilton on 9 April 1942. 4


Margaret married James GEBBIE, son of Andrew GEBBIE and Elizabeth COWAN, on 8 November 1889 in Park Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (James GEBBIE was born 16 February 1866 at 00.00 am in Rumbling Sykes, Craigneuk, Lanarkshire, Scotland 17 and died 1 March 1931 at 9.50 pm in 8 Wilson Terrace, Cadzow, Hamilton, Scotland.). The cause of his death was acute lobar pneumonia over 6 days.4


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage of James and Margaret was conducted according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The witnesses were William Gebbie and Mary Smith. Andrew Robertson, Minister of Cadzow, officiated.

James Gebbie was a bachelor of 23 years, worked as a coal miner, and gave his address as 80 Portland Place Hamilton. Both of his parents were living.

Margaret Tweedley was an unmarried woman of 23 years, who worked as a domestic servant and lived at 72 Muir Street Hamilton. Her father was dead.

The marriage was registered at Hamilton on 11 November 1889, W. J. T. Rae registrar. 1
