General Notes:
When James was born in 1866, his father, Andrew, who made his X mark, was the informant of the boy's birth before George Sneddon, registrar, at Dalziel on 5 March 1866. His mother's surname was inaccurately recorded as Robertson. Robertson was in fact his mother's mother's name.
James Gebbie gave notice before the registrar at Hamilton, William J. T. Rae, on 19 February 1890, of the birth of his daughter, Margaret George Gebbie, nine days before. His occupation was noted then as coal miner.
In 1891 James was living with his wife and daughter at 3 Burnblea Street, Hamilton. He was aged 25 years and was a coal miner.
James Gebbie's daughter, Isabella, was born in 1900, and James was the informant of her birth. He gave notice before James Frame, registrar, at Hamilton on 3 May 1900.
The 1901 census for Hamilton, Lanarkshire, recorded James Gebbie, his wife and four children, and his mother in law, living at 17 Moore Street, in a dwelling with two windowed rooms. James Gebbie, a married man and head of the household, was recorded as aged 35 years and had been born in Dalziel parish (Motherwell). He worked as a coal miner.
In 1902, when his son James was born, James was recorded as a coal miner. It was he who gave notice to the registrar at Hamilton about a fortnight after the boy's birth.
His daughter, Rebecca, was born in 1904, and James, a coal miner, was the informant before the Hamilton registrar.
In 1911 the census for Hamilton recorded James Gebbie as head of a household living at 14 Moore Street, Cadzow. With him lived his wife Margaret and their six children: Margaret, Andrew, Isabella, James, Rebecca and Peter, whose ages ranged from 21 years to 3 years. James Gebbie was recorded as 45 years old and working as a coal hewer. He had been born in Dalziel parish.
In 1915 James Gebbie was described as 'coal miner' in his daughter, Margaret's death certificate. It was James who notified the registrar of Margaret's death.
In the marriage certificate of his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1918, James Gebbie was recorded as a coal miner, as he was in 1924 when his daughter Isabella married.
James Gebbie died in 1931 at the recorded age of 65 years. His death certificate recorded him as a 'coal hewer married to Margaret Tweedley'. Both of his parents were deceased.
His widow, Margaret, died in 1942. He was described in the death certificate as a 'coal hewer'.
Similarly, in 1963 when his son Andrew, died James Gebbie was recorded as having been a coal hewer.
In 1976 when his daughter Rebecca died, then in 1985 when his daughter Elizabeth died, and in 1990 when his daughter Isabella died, James was recorded in her death certificate as 'James Gebbie coal miner deceased'. 3 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16

RUMBLINGSYKES
Rumblingsykes was an area of the parish of Dalziel (now Motherwell and Wishaw district). It was situated approximately in the area of Wishaw now called Shieldmuir or Craigneuk.
Until the 1840s it was a rural environment. After that, the coming of coal production changed its nature and appearance, as was true of most of what is at present Motherwell and Wishaw. People came from many other parts of Scotland, from England, and from Ireland, to work the coal, to earn a living and feed their families.

James Gebbie, son of the deceased, and who had been present where the death took place, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, James Frame, at Hamilton on 2 March 1931. 6
James married Margaret QUIGLEY, daughter of Patrick QUIGLY (DNA Linked) and Margaret GEORGE (DNA Linked), on 8 November 1889 in Park Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Margaret QUIGLEY was born 10 April 1866 at 11.30 pm in Gauchalland Row, Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 17 18, baptised on 2 June 1866 in St Joseph's RC Parish, Kilmarnock, Scotland 19 and died 9 April 1942 at 5.30 am in 29 Strathaven Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 2.). The cause of her death was myocardial degeneration and cardiac failure.6
Marriage Notes:
The marriage of James and Margaret was conducted according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The witnesses were William Gebbie and Mary Smith. Andrew Robertson, Minister of Cadzow, officiated.
James Gebbie was a bachelor of 23 years, worked as a coal miner, and gave his address as 80 Portland Place Hamilton. Both of his parents were living.
Margaret Tweedley was an unmarried woman of 23 years, who worked as a domestic servant and lived at 72 Muir Street Hamilton. Her father was dead.
The marriage was registered at Hamilton on 11 November 1889, W. J. T. Rae registrar. 1
