  General Notes:

The 1851 census recorded Andrew aged 8 years living in Old Monkland parish but as having been born in Barony parish Lanarkshire.

The 1861 census recorded the birthplace of Charles and Andrew as Old Monkland parish, whereas the 1851 recorded them as born in Barony parish, Glasgow. The discrepancy may be down to the informant, or simply family muddle with the passing of time.

Andrew's son, James, was born in 1866 at Rumblingsykes in the parish of Dalziel, Lanarkshire. Andrew was the informant and described himself as a coal miner. He made his X mark before the registrar, George Sneddon, at Dalziel on 5 March 1866.

In 1876 Andrew Gebbie was the informant of his daughter Agnes' birth before the registrar in Dalziel parish on 23 November. He made his X mark. He was a coal miner according to the certificate.

In 1881 the census of that year recorded Andrew and Elizabeth Gebbie living at 76 Portland Place, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, with seven of their children. The eldest was William aged 16 years and the youngest Andre aged 6 months.

Andrew was a coal miner according to the marriage certificate of his son, James, in 1889. He may have lived at 80 Portland Place, if the address his son gave was the family home.

Andrew's address in the 1891 census for Hamilton was 98 Portland Place. He was aged 49 years and a coal miner. As well as his own children, Andrew had his grandson, Robert, aged 1 month, born in Hamilton, staying with the family. His house had two windowed rooms. His married son, James Gebbie, married to Margaret Quigley/Tweedley, lived not far away in Burnblea Street.

In 1901 Andrew was aged 61 years and was a coal hewer. He and his family were still living at 98 Portland Place Hamilton. Several of his children were no longer there, but there were two grandsons: Michael 7 years, and William 4 years, both born in Hamilton.

Andrew Gebbie died towards the end of 1910. His death certificate recorded that he was a coal miner and the widower of Elizabeth Cowan. His recorded age at death was 68 years. Both of his parents were deceased.

Andrew was deceased by the time of his son, James' death, in 1931. In his death certificate, Andrew was recorded as 'coal hewer deceased'. 3 5 6 8 9 10 11 12 13

  Medical Notes:

J. Wilson MB ChB certified the cause of death.

William Gebbie, son of the deceased man and of 16 Wilson Terrace, Cadzow, and who was present where the death took place, gave notice of his father's death before Gavin Frame, registrar, at Hamilton, on 5 December 1910.

Andrew married Elizabeth COWAN, daughter of William COWAN and Isabella ROBERTSON, on 25 November 1864 in Flemington, Dalziel Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Elizabeth COWAN was born about 1845 in Bannockburn, Stirlingshire, Scotland 1 and died on 26 July 1910 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 8 14.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The Minister of Dalziel parish, J. Loudon, married the couple, and the witneses werer James Cowan and John Cowan.

Andrew Gebbie was a bachelor of 20 years of age residing at Flemington in Dalziel parish. He worked as a coal miner.
Andrew made his X mark as signature.

Elizabeth Cowan also made her X mark. She was a 19 year old single woman, also resident at Flemington.

The marriage was registered on 28 November 1864 at Dalziel (Motherwell). 1
