Although the first 'e' is blotted or rendered as a single stroke in the original document, so is the second 'e' of the name, and they are not dotted, whereas the 'i' of the surname is dotted. The same is true of the 'e's in James and Henry.
William Gebbie with his wife and family were recorded by the 1851 census for Old Monkland parish Lanarkshire. William was aged 39 years and his wife 33 years. He was a coal miner who had been born in Carnwath, Lanarkshire. Elizabeth was born in Glasgow. They had four sons: James aged 12 years and born in Abbey parish Renfrewshire, a coal miner drawer, James aged 10 years and born in Abbey parish Renfrewshire, a coal miner drawer, Andrew aged 8 years and born in Barony parish Lanarkshire, a scholar, Charles aged 10 months and born in Barony parish Lanarkshire.
William Gebbie was recorded as a coal miner in the 1855 birth certificate of his son Robert, where William's wife Elizabeth was the informant. William's age was recorded there as 44 years and his place of birth as Glasgow.

(Note:This may be a similar situation as in the 1855 birth certificate of his son Robert, where it was his wife Elizabeth who gave the information and not William himself.) With him lived his wife Elizabeth, born Nitshill and aged 55 years, and their sons John aged 29 years, Charles aged 20 years, Thomas aged 18 years, Robert aged 16 years, and their daughter Elizabeth aged 13 years. All of the sons were recorded as born in Old Monkland and Elizabeth as born in Shotts.
