  General Notes:

The 1841 census for Wallace town, St Quivox parish, recorded Michael. He was a weaver, aged in the age range 30-34 years, and was born in Ayrshire. Although this census did not specify relationships, the entry suggests he had a wife and three children living with him. This entry was near the 'Thomas and Helan Quigley', his parents' entry.

The 1861 census recorded Michael living at Bryans Land, Elba Street, St Quivox, Ayrshire. He had been born in Ayr. He was a widower aged 56 years, and was a cotton weaver. His son, Thomas, and his daughter, Helen, lived nearby. His son James Quigley, and another son called Michael Turner, lived with him. James was aged 4 years and Michael aged 12 years. Both had been born in St Quivox.

In his marriage certificate when he married Catherine Wright in 1866, his age was recorded as 56 years.

When his son, Michael, married in 1870, Michael senior was recorded as a cotton weaver in his son's marriage certificate.

PARISH RELIEF APPLICATION
In 1878, on 10 December, at 11.10 am, Michael applied for parish relief in Glasgow. He was residing at that time at 4 St Joseph's Place, back, low 1st left, with his son Michael Quigley.

The inspector visited Michael in connection with this application at 11.00 am on 11 December 1878. He was told Michael was a weaver, aged 75 years and married. He had done no work for 4 years and had therefore received no earnings during that time. He was Roman Catholic.

He was applying for assistance because he suffered from bronchitis and had an injured side. Dr Smellie's name was given to verify this . This was Michael's first application, and the settlement was Ayr.

Then details were given of the sequence of his three marriages, and the ages and particulars of his children.
1
His first wife was Agnes O'Brien who died in Ayr in 1841. His daughter Helen, aged 48 years, who was born in Ayr, was married to William McCrae, a labourer residing in 516 John St. They had no family. Thomas, aged 45 years, also born in Ayr, was married and in America. John, aged 42 years, born in Ayr, was married, with 8 children. He was a slater and bricklayer. He was idle, and resided at 81 East Nelson Street.
2
Michael's second wife was Mary Neil who died in Ayr. His son Michael, aged 30 years, was born from this relatonship. He was married with 4 children. He too was a slater but there was little doing at present. Michael seemed to stay with Michael's family: 'Applicant resides here' was the inspector's comment.
James aged 22 years, born in Ayr, was also Mary's son. He was single, an apprentice slater. He was idle for 12 months, only getting a day occasionally. He resided with John.
3
Michael's third wife was Catherine Wright. He had been married for the third time in Ayr about 11 or 12 years before by the Rev Mr Robertson.

The rent for the house was 12/- a month; it was a room and kitchen. Then William Gray, the inspector, signed the application. the particulars of settlement were as follows:

In 1886, Michael's daughter (in law) Ann Kane applied for parish relief. His address then was given by her as 5 Society Street Camlachie (Glasgow).

Michael's death certificate of 1889 noted that he was a widower aged 76 years who had been a hand loom weaver. Rose Ann Quigley, who notified the registrar in 1889 of Michael Quigley's death, was his daughter in law. She was his son, John's wife.

Michael was recorded in his son, John's death certificate in 1919 as a 'weaver, deceased'. 7 8 9 10
