Another name for Thomas was QUIGLY, Thomas.1 4 5

  General Notes:

Thomas was recorded by the 1841 census, living at Elba Street, Wallacetown, with Michael and Agnes Quigly, probably his parents, and Helen and John, probably his sister and brother. He was aged 8 years.

No parental information was given in Thomas' marriage certificate in 1858. Also his age is rather high, generally in keeping with the apparent family tradition of number muddle perhaps! It seems likely that he is the child mentioned in the 1841 census.

In 1861 Thomas Quigley and family were recorded by the census for Ayr (St Quivox) living at Wilson's Land, Elba Street. Thomas, the head of the household, was a widower aged 28 years, and a cotton weaver. His place of birth was recorded as St Quivox parish. With him in his household were his son, Thomas, aged 4 years, his unmarried sister, Helen, aged 31 years, and a baby of 2 months also called Helen, who was recorded as the granddaughter of the head of the household, Thomas.

In 1878 some information was given about Thomas in the application made by his father for parish relief. Thomas was said then to be 45 years old and to have been born in Ayr. He was married in 1878 and had gone to America. 6 7

  Research Notes:

THOMAS IN AMERICA

The 1880 US census for Northbridge, Worcester, Massachusetts recorded an entry where the head of the household was a Thomas Quigley, aged 45 years and born in Scotland. Both of his parents were also born in Scotland. His wife was a Mary J. Quigley, aged 36 years, also born in Scotland as were her parents. Five children were born in Massachusetts: Mary (13 years), George (9 years), Roderick (5 years), John (2 years), and Frederick C. (6 months). This may be this same Thomas, but a certain amount of doubt remains and this would need further investigation.

Thomas married Mary KELLY on 25 October 1858 in Roman Catholic Chapel, Ayr, Scotland. (Mary KELLY was born about 1835 and died between 1858 and 1861.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church.

The groom, aged 33 years, and a cotton weaver, was normally resident at Content Street, St Quivox parish, Ayrshire. This was his first marriage. He signed the register.

The bride was of the same address, possibly of the same age, this is not clear. She was a hand sewer, and she had not been married before. She made her X mark. No parental information was given. Her residence was given as Content Street, St Quivox parish.

The priest was Fr John Gallaher RCC.
The witnesses were Thomas Reid and Margaret Ewart.
The registrar's name was indecipherable.

NOTE
There is also a listing in Family Search of a 'marriage' of this couple on 10 October 1858 in the parish of St Quivox and Newton On Ayr. This is possibly a proclamation rather than a marriage.

Thomas next married Mary PETTIGREW, daughter of William John PETTIGREW and Jane NEIL, on 5 September 1862 in St Mary's RC Church, Abercrombie Street, Glasgow, Scotland.1 2 (Mary PETTIGREW was born about 1841.)

  Marriage Notes:

The banns of marriage were called and the marriage took place according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church.

Thomas Quigley, widower and cotton weaver, was recorded as aged 27 years. His address was 25 Market Street, Bridgeton. Both of his parents were living.

Mary Pettigrew was an unmarried woman who worked as a cotton winder. She was recorded as aged 21 years. Her address was the same as that of the bridegroom. Both of her parents were already deceased.

The priest who performed the ceremony was E. Noonan. The bride and groom each made an X mark. The witnesses were Peter McErvey and Margaret Campbell, and each of the witnesses made an X mark.

The marriage was registered at Glasgow, on 6 September 1862, the registrar signing being William Sloan, and the senior registrar Alexander Waddel initialled the registration. 2
