   Other names for Mary were NIELL, Mary ² and TWEEDLIE, Mary.

  General Notes:

When Michael applied for poor relief in 1878, he listed Mary Neil as his second wife and mother of Michael and James, two of his sons. It noted that Mary died in Ayr, but does not say when.

From the ages of her two sons, Mary Neil's death must have taken place after 1856 and before Michael's marriage to his third wife Catherine in 1866, possibly later in that decade rather than earlier. The 1861 census recorded Michael as a widower (see his entry), so it may be that Mary was dead by then.

Mary married Michael QUIGLEY, son of Thomas QUIGLEY and Helen McQUILLAN, on 9 June 1848 in St Margaret's RC Church, Ayr, Scotland.¹ (Michael QUIGLEY was born about 1807 in near Old Tower, Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland ³ and died 12 January 1889 at 4.00 am in 5 Society Street, Glasgow, Scotland.). The cause of his death was probably diarrhoea of 8 days duration and debility.
