In the 1841 census for the parish of Rothes in Moray, Jannet McKinzie was recorded living in one of the dwellings at Pitcraigie with two young men whom we know from other sources to be her sons, John and William McKinzie. Jannet was recorded as 64 years of age and of independent means. She answered 'yes' to whether she was born in the census county. Her husband is not listed in the household entry.

The 1851 census for Rothes recorded living at Muiryfold, next to Drumbain, Janet McKenzie, head of household, a shoemaker's widow aged 73 years, and now a pauper, that is with no income of her own to support herself. her place of birth was Knockando, Elginshire (Moray). Two unmarried sons lived with Janet, both agricultural labourers, both born in Rothes: John aged 33 years and William aged 41 years.

When Janet McKenzie died in 1858, her death certificate recorded her age at death as 80 years. It also recorded her as a widow and a pauper, that is with no personal income. Both of her parents were deceased. 5 6 8 9

  Research Notes:

JEAN, JANE AND JANET

In the record of George Gordon's baptism, his mother's name is noted as Jean Grant. In his death certificate it is noted as Jane Grant. One of his daughters was called Jane.

The use of these names can be complicated in Scotland, Jean, Jane, Jeanie, Jenny, Jannet, Jonet and Jessie often being interchangeable.

Some families have a Jean and a Janet among the children. They are supported in family history circles by databases that keep the two separate, although in recent times both Scotland's People and Family Search LDS have shown Jane and Janet together in the search for Jane. For example in the Forename Variants section of Scotland's People it says
"Jane could be recorded as Jean, Jessie or Janet."

The rule here is that there is no rule, simply practice. We cannot begin to legislate about what people in the past did, only observe.

WHICH JEAN GRANT?

The points in favour of the Jean Grant featured here are:

1

She was linked to Pitcraigie in both census and death records. In 1809, Peter Gordon's nephew, Alexander Gordon, was baptized in Rothes. His father, James, was referred to as 'James Gordon son of James Gordon in Pitcraigie'.

2

Her age was compatible with Peter's: he born in 1779, she in 1775

3

Both were unmarried at the time of George's conception

4

Both married fairly quickly after George was born, to other people, Peter in 1811 and Jean in 1813. This pattern is a not unusual one in the mores of that time and place.

5

Their background and families were compatible, both having come recently to reside in Rothes from roots in the Spey valley in the overlap between Banffshire and Moray. In addition, both families had some degree of status and history in their community but were not rich in money or goods. It is likely they were known to each other, perhaps over more than one generation.

6

The child of Peter and Jean seems to have been named for the Grants, no 'George' being traditional in that particular family of Gordons. When George Gordon named his first legitimate son Peter Lewis, he very likely did not use George for his maternal grandfather since he already had an illegitimate child of that name, but used his father's name followed by a name very typical of the Grants from whom his mother came.

  Medical Notes:

Francis Darksone MD, who saw the deceased on 1 February, certified the cause of death.

William McKenzie, the deceased woman's son, who had been present where her death occurred, gave notice of his mother's death before the registrar at Rothes on 4 February 1858 and made his X mark.

William Douglas, Sexton, certified that Janet was buried in the Churchyard of Rothes. 6

Jean had a relationship with Peter GORDON, son of James GORDON in Pitcraigie, DNA Linked and Isobel DUNCAN (DNA Linked). (Peter GORDON was baptised on 26 January 1779 in Mortlach parish, Banffshire, Scotland 10 and died 17 February 1868 at 10.10 pm in New Street, Rothes, Morayshire, Scotland 11.). The cause of his death was apoplexia serosa.6
