Old Parish Register Mortlach Parish Banffshire Baptisms
"Baptized 1779 Gordon January 26 Peter son to James Gordon and Isabel Duncan his wife in Relitich [sic]- Witnesses Peter Garrow in Ellevrid & James Duncan in Allbeg "
In the baptism entry for his son George in 1810, Peter Gordon was recorded as being of the town of Rothes and being a roadmaker by occupation.
The 1841 census for Rothes Morayshire recorded Peter Gordon living at New Street. He was aged 60 years and was recorded as being an agricultural labourer. He had been born outside the county in which he lived. Two households with a James Gordon as a member lived near, one on either side, the older one his brother probably.
The 1851 census recorded Peter Gordon living with his wife Isabella in New Street, Rothes, Morayshire. Peter, born in Mortlach Banffshire, was aged 62 years (he was in fact 72 years of age) and worked as a tenementer.
When Peter Gordon died in 1868 his death certificate recorded him as a road contractor, widower of Isabella Inch. His recorded age at death was 89 years. Both of his parents were deceased.
In the death certificate of his son George in 1885 Peter Gordon was recorded as a 'road contractor deceased'. 2 3 5 6 7

"In the year 1766 a village was begun to be built on the plain of Rothes, upon leases of 38 years, and the life-rent thereafter of the possessor, after which the building becomes the property of the landlord: each tenement is the eighth part of an acre, at the rent of 10s. yearly: from an half to two acres of land, at the rate of a guinea the acre, save where the soil is greatly inferior, is occupied with each tenement, but without any lease. The village at present accommodates about 300 inhabitants. In the year 1796 there were set off 41 additional tenements, for its farther enlargement."
PITCRAIGIE
"The establishment of no manufacture has been yet proposed, though a considerable stream, working a corn and fulling mill, washes the whole length of its streets: a few artizans only supply the exigencies of the country. Pitcraiggy, and the glen, in which there is a snug commodious house and garden, on the margin of a little brook under the side of a hill, covered with a considerable extent of birch, called the Torwood, is the property of Robert Cuming of Logie, Esq."
