In the 1841 census for the parish of Rothes in Moray, Jannet McKinzie was recorded living in one of the dwellings at Pitcraigie with two young men whom we know from other sources to be her sons, John and William McKinzie. John McKinzie was recorded as aged 25 years, or in that age group as designated by the 1841 regulations, and had been born in Moray. No occupation for him was noted.

The 1851 census for Rothes recorded living at Muiryfold, next to Drumbain, Janet McKenzie, head of household, a shoemaker's widow aged 73 years, and now a pauper, that is with no income of her own to support herself. her place of birth was Knockando, Elginshire (Moray). Two unmarried sons lived with Janet, both agricultural labourers, both born in Rothes: John aged 33 years and William aged 41 years.

John McKenzie died in 1863 aged 45 years and single, according to his death certificate. He was recorded there as an agricultural labourer. Both of his parents were deceased. 1 2 3 4 5
