  General Notes:

Thomas Adams was recorded by the 1851 census for Scotland as head of the household living in Turnie Dykes in the parish of Crichton, Midlothian, with his son John Adams, and his daughter, Mary Adams. His age was recorded as 55 years and his status as widower. He had been born in Ireland and worked as a railway labourer.

In the marriage certificate of Jane Adams in 1855, her father, Thomas Adams, was recorded as being a farmer.

Thomas Adams was a labourer according to the marriage certificate of his daughter Rebecca in March 1858 and that of his daughter Mary in 1859.

In June 1858 Thomas Adams' daughter Ann married. In her marriage certificate Thomas was recorded as a 'Horse Dealer'.

Thomas Adams was recorded by the 1861 census for the parish of Crichton, Midlothian, living at Lauchland in Oakmuir village with his son, John and his wife and family, as well as another son of Thomas Adams, James Adams. He was recorded as 66 years old and had been born in Ireland. No occupation was noted for him. He was a widower.

In the death certificate of his daughter, Mary Adams, in 1864, Thomas Adams was recorded as a 'retired farmer'.

When his son James married in 1870 Thomas Adams was recorded as "late Horsedealer".

In 1871 the census for Edinburgh recorded Thomas Adam as visitor living in a small household on the north side at 190 Cowgate. His son in law, James Adam, a provision merchant and a widower, was head of the household. Apart from these two, the household consisted of a boarder, John Bruce, an unmarried man of 20 years, who worked as a grocer and was Irish born. Thomas Adam was recorded as a former horse dealer, and was widowed. He was Irish born and aged 76 years.

Thomas Adams died in 1878. In his death certificate he was recorded as a 'Retired farmer Widower of Sarah McMillan'. His recorded age at death was 84 years. His parents were deceased.

In her death certificate of 1913 Rebecca's father was named as 'Thomas Adams farm servant' by the informant, James Cairns, Rebecca's grandson. 1 4 5 6 7 8 9

James Adams, the son of Thomas Adams who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, James Matthew, at Corstorphine on 9 April 1878. 4
