General Notes:
John Adams was recorded by the 1851 census for Scotland living Turnie Dykes in the parish of Crichton, Midlothian, with his father, Thomas Adams, and his sister, Mary Adams. His age was recorded as 18 years and his status as unmarried. He had been born in Ireland. An occupation was noted for him but was too unclear to read.
When Sarah Adams was born in Borthwick Parish in 1855, it was her father, John Adams, who was the informant of her birth. The 1855 birth certificate recorded more information about the parties than is now the norm. It recorded that John Adams was a labourer, aged 22 years, who was born in 'Armaugh, County of Armaugh', Ireland. It also recorded that John Adams and his wife were married on 8 May 1854 at Mellon Mill in the parish of Pencaitland, and that they had one daughter alive, presumably the new baby.
John Adams, gave notice of his 11 month old son, David's death before Alexander MacDougall, registrar, at Borthwick, on 26 March 1859. John Adams was recorded as a labourer by occupation.
John Adams was recorded by the 1861 census for the parish of Crichton, Midlothian, as head of a household of seven people, including himself, living at Lauchland in Oakmuir village. He worked as an agricultural labourer and was Irish born. He was a married man, his wife and three children living with him, as did his father, and his brother James. John was recorded as 29 years old. The family lived in a dwelling that had only one room that was windowed.
In 1871 the census for Crichton, Midlothian, recorded John Adams as head of a household living at Tynebank, Turnie Dykes, with his wife and family. As well as his wife, there were six others living in the household: five were his children and the sixth was a 'relative' named Mary Adams. This little girl was probably John's niece, Sarah, daughter of his dead sister, Mary, who had died in 1864. John himself was recorded as a limeburner by occupation, and farmer of forty acres of arable land. He had been born in Ireland and was 40 years of age.
Isabella Adams or Brown died in 1875 at the recorded age of 44 years. In her death certificate she was recorded as married to John Adams, limeburner.
The 1881 census for the parish of Crichton, Edinburgh, recorded John Adams living as head of the household at Crichton Lime Works with his three sons, John, Isaac and William, and his daughter, Sarah. Two grandsons also lived in the household named as Robert Davidson and James A. Brown. John Adams was recorded as 50 years of age and was a widower. He was a limeburner employing 12 men. He had been born in Ireland. The family's dwelling place had two windowed rooms. 5 6
