Thomas Adams was recorded by the 1861 census for the parish of Crichton, Midlothian, living at Lauchland in Oakmuir village with his family. He was recorded as 4 years old and had been born in Borthwick, Midlothian.
In 1871 the census for Crichton, Midlothian, recorded John Adams as head of a household living at Tynebank, Turnie Dykes, with his wife and family. As well as his wife, there were six others living in the household: five were his children and the sixth was a 'relative' named Mary Adams. Thomas Adams was the eldest boy of the children recorded in the entry. His birthplace was noted as Borthwick, and he was 14 years old and a scholar.
Thomas Adam [sic], Isabella Brown's son, gave notice of her death before the registrar, George Noble, at Borthwick on 16 January 1875.
