  General Notes:

James Adams was recorded by the 1861 census for the parish of Crichton, Midlothian, lving at Lauchland in Oakmuir village with his brother, John, and his wife and family, as well as the father of John and James, Thomas Adams. He was recorded as 19 years old and had been born in Ireland. By occupation he was an agricultural labourer. He was unmarried.

In 1871 the census for Corstorphine recorded James and his wife, Margaret Adams, living at Meadowhouse. James worked as a dairyman.

James Adams, the son of Thomas Adams who had been present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, James Matthew, at Corstorphine on 9 April 1878.

The 1881 census for Midlothian recorded James, his wife Margaret, and their three childre, Thomas, Maggie and William, living at Lower Village Claycotes, Corstorphine. James was a dairyman.

When James Adam died in 1888, his death certificate recorded him as "Dairyman (Master) Married to Margaret Johnstone". His age at death was recorded as 46 years, and both of his parents were recorded as deceased. 2 3 4 6

James married Margaret JOHNSTONE, daughter of William JOHNSTONE and Margaret RENWICK, on 30 November 1870 in St John's Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (Margaret JOHNSTONE was born about 1848 in Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland 1 2 3 and died on 9 July 1899 in Meadowhouse, Corstorphine, Midlothian, Scotland 7.). The cause of her death was heart disease of uncertain duration, and middle ear disease over 2 months.4


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. James MacNair, Minister of Canongate, married the couple. The witnesses were John Bruce and Christine Thomson.

James Adams, a bachelor aged 28 years, was a dairyman living at Meadow House, Corstrphine. His mother was recorded as deceased.

Margaret Johnstone was 22 years old, single and a housekeeper by occupation. Her address was noted as 127 Canongate, Edinburgh.

The marriage was registered at Edinburgh on 2 December 1870. 1
