   Cause of her death was heart disease of uncertain duration, and middle ear disease over 2 months.3

The 1891 census recorded Margaret Adams, now a widow and head of the household, living and working at Wester Coates Dairy (Farm) in Corstorphine, Midlothian. With her lived her four children, Thomas, Margaret R., William and Sarah. Margaret was a dairywoman. In the household was a Margaret Cairns aged 19 years, and born in Liberton. Margaret (Johnstone) Adams was the widow of James Adams and James was the brother of Margaret Cairns' mother Rebecca Adams. Margaret Cairns was a servant.

When Margaret Adams died in 1899, her death certificate recorded her as "Widow of James Adams Dairyman". Her age at death was noted as 51 years. Both of her parents were deceased. 3 8 9

WEST COATES FARM EDINBURGH

This farm was situated near Water of Leith, between Roseburn and Haymarket, on the north side of the A8.

Scotland's Places website gives details of maps, digital images, manuscripts, photographs, prints and drawings relating to the history of this farm, and this history is interrelated with that of George Heriot's Hospital, whose grounds it was part of originally, eg "211183 (1865) Photographic copy of feuing plan. Title: 'PROPOSED FEUING PLAN OF PART OF THE GROUND BELONGING to THE GOVERNORS OF HERIOTS HOSPITAL AT WEST COATES by JOHN CHESSER 1865'."

There are four references to Mrs Adams, under the heading of Prints and Drawings, between 1884 and 1896: "211183 (1884) Site plan. Title: 'Plan of Ground at Wester Coates occupied by Mrs Adams Carfrae & Belfrage'. Dated: '1884' 211183 (1/1893) Site plan. Title: 'Copy Plan of Ground at Wester Coates let to Mrs Adams'. Insc: 'Heriot Works Office Edinr'. Dated: 'January 1893'. 211183 (8/1885) Site plan. Title: 'Ground at Wester Coates let to Mrs Adams'. 211183 (2/1896) Site plan. Much of Wester or West Coates is now a densely built residential area of hotels and private accomodation.

Thomas Adams, Margaret's son, of 25 Downie Terrace, was the informant of her death. 3


Margaret married James ADAMS, son of Thomas ADAMS (DNA Linked) and Sarah McMILLAN (DNA Linked), on 30 November 1870 in St John's Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (James ADAMS was born about 1842 in probably County Armagh, Ireland 4 and died on 14 May 1888 in Wester Coates Farm, Murrayfield, Edinburgh, Scotland 2.). The cause of his death was apoplexy over 1 day.3

The marriage took place after banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. James MacNair, Minister of Canongate, married the couple. The witnesses were John Bruce and Christine Thomson.

James Adams, a bachelor aged 28 years, was a dairyman living at Meadow House, Corstorphine. His mother was recorded as deceased.

Margaret Johnstone was 22 years old, single and a housekeeper by occupation. Her address was noted as 127 Canongate, Edinburgh. Her father, William Johnstone, a gardener, and her mother, Margaret Renwick, were both living.

The marriage was registered at Edinburgh on 2 December 1870. 1 11
