General Notes:
No baptism or birth record has been uncovered thus far for Normina Winton. However, Norminia Winton was recorded as 3 months of age, when the 1851 census was taken on the night of 30 to 31 March 1851, placing her birth at the very end of the year 1850 or the very beginning of 1851. She was living in the St Cuthbert's area of Edinburgh with her parents, James and Helen Winton. They lived at Sime's Court. Norminia had been born in Edinburgh.
In 1861, the census for the St Giles registration district recorded a daughter living with her parents, James and Helen Winton. The name recorded by the census, according to the GRO transcribers was 'Prozinia Winton'. The small family group lived at 395 Lawnmarket. 'Prozinia' was 10 years of age and, like both of her parents, was recorded as having been born in St Cuthbert's parish. She was a scholar. There is no doubt this was Normina Winton.
In January of 1871, Normina Winton's son, David, whose father was Thomas Philip, was born.
The census of 1871 recorded Normina Winton living with her parents, her baby son, and Alfred, the son of her half sister Catherine, at Redrow, Bonnyrigg, in Cockpen registration district. Normina was 20 years of age, and had been born in St Cuthbert's area of Edinburgh. She was a carpet printer. Her son, David Phillips, was 3 months old. Normina was recorded as unmarried.
Normina's daughter, Janet, was born in February 1973 in Bonnyrigg.
In April of 1876 Normina married George Strachan Gordon.
Normina Gordon was recorded by the 1881 census for Edinburgh living at Dalkeith Road Police Station, Liberton, with her husband and five children. She was recorded as a 'Constables Wife' by the enumerator, and was 30 years of age. She had been born in Edinburgh.
In 1891, the census recorded Normina Gordon, aged 40 years, living with her husband and family at 32 Low Port, Linlithgow. Her birthplace was recorded as Edinburgh. She had six children living with her.
In the marriage certificate of her daughter, Janet, in 1897, Normina Winton was noted as a witness to the marriage, and was the only parent of Janet Winton listed. She was recorded as 'Normina Winton domestic servant now wife of George Strachan Gordon oil refiner'. This description was also included in the death certificate of Janet Winton in 1943.
In the 1901 Census, Normina was recorded living in the Pumpherston-Mid Calder area, outside of Edinburgh. Her age was recorded as 50 years and she had been born in 'Edinburgh, Edinburghshire'. Two of her sons, James and William, lived with her.
The 1911 census for Uphall West Lothian recorded George Gordon as head of a household comprising George aged 64 years, his wife Normina aged 60 years, and a boarder, John McGlone, a single man aged 21 years, living at Hawthorn Cottage. In the married women columns, Normina was recorded as having been married for 35 years, and having had eight children, seven of whom were still living. Her birthplace was Edinburgh.
In her death certificate of 1937 it was recorded that Normina was the 'widow of George Strachan Gordon, jobbing gardener'. Her age was noted as 86 years. Both of her parents were deceased. 3 4 5 6 7 8

NORMINA
This is an unusual Christian name. It appears to be the female name form of the male name 'Norman'. 'Mina' is often used as a diminutive. The longer form 'Normanina' will have been condensed to Normina.
An uncle of Normina, a younger brother of her father, was baptised in 1822 in St Cuthbert's parish Edinburgh, and named Norman Pringle Winton. We know that a few years later a marriage took place in 1826 in St Cuthbert's parish of Norman Pringle and Anne Steuart. A son called Norman William Drummond Pringle was born to this couple in the same parish in 1836. This family belonged to the elevated Pringle family of Stitchel or Stichill in Roxburghshire. In the Pringle Baronetcy of Stichill there had been several incumbents named Norman. In the 17th century in Pencaitland in East Lothian well to do Wintons and Pringles were near neighbours. There may be a link between the families through marriage or business, which is not very apparent to us as yet.
Later the name was continued in Normina's children and descendants as Norminnie and Norma.

Normina's daughter, Christina H. Newbigging, who had been present where Normina died, gave notice of her mother's death before William Connelly, registrar, at Glasgow on 6 December 1937.

Normina next married George Strachan GORDON, son of George GORDON (DNA Linked) and Christian HOME, on 18 April 1876 in 10 Stanley Place, London Road, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (George Strachan GORDON was born on 12 June 1845 in Clatt parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 10, baptised on 29 July 1845 in Clatt parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland 10 and died on 25 March 1929 in Kingston Grange Golf Course, Edinburgh, Scotland.). The cause of his death was apparently cerebral haemorrhage.
Marriage Notes:
The marriage took place in the district of Canongate, in the burgh of Edinburgh, after banns, according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Robert Milne of Abbey Parish, Edinburgh was the officiating minister. The witnesses were Thomas Anderson and Isabella Smith.
Geo(rge) Gordon, a police constable aged 29 years, lived at 10 Stanley Place, London Road, Edinburgh. He was a bachelor. His father was deceased and his mother still living.
Normina Winton, also unmarried, of the same address, was 26 years old and was a domestic servant. Both of her parents were alive.
The marriage was registered at Edinburgh on 20 April 1876, George McArthur being the signing registrar.
