  General Notes:

Like David, Normina Winton's son, Janet was born outside of a married relationship. Her birth certificate was registered on 13 March 1873, at Cockpen, before registrar, Peter Mitchell. No father's name was included on her birth certificate, only that of Normina Winton, her mother, who was described as being a domestic servant. However in 1881 a child named 'Janet Phillips', aged 8 years, born Bonnyrig, Cockpen, was resident with Normina Winton's mother, Helen, at Cowan's Close, in St Cuthbert's parish Edinburgh. This suggests Janet's parentage was the same as her brother David's.

The 1891 census for Newington, Edinburgh, recorded Janet Gordon Winton [sic] living with James Winton, head of the household, at 187 Causewayside Edinburgh. Janet was recorded as the granddaughter of James Winton. She was a single woman, aged 18 years, and was recorded as having been born in Edinburghshire. She was employed as a laundress.

William White died in 1929. 'Jessie White', widow of the deceased man who had been present where he died, gave notice of his death before the registrar, D. Dinnie, at Edinburgh on 10 July 1929.

Janet White died in 1943. Her death certificate recorded her as 'widow of William White glass cutter' and as aged 70 years. Her parentage was recorded as in her marriage certificate. 2 3 4

  Research Notes:

SURNAME

'Gold' in Janet's name is most probably a form of the surname 'Gould', her great grandmother's name before marriage being 'Janet Gould'.

  Medical Notes:

W. F. G. Radford LRCPSE certified the causes of death.

John Ormiston, Janet's son in law, gave notice of her death before the registrar, Thomas M. Telfer, at Leith on 17 March 1943. 4

Janet married William WHITE on 4 June 1897 in All Saints Church, Brougham Street, Edinburgh, Scotland.1 (William WHITE was born about 1849 in Alloa parish, Clackmannanshire, Scotland 1 3 8 and died on 9 July 1929 in 3a Annandale Street, Edinburgh, Scotland 1.). The cause of his death was senile decay and cardiac failure.4

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated, after banns, according to the forms of the Episcopal Church. The priest was Alex D. Murdoch, and the witnesses were Peter McGow and Normina Gordon.

William White was a widower, recorded as 44 years of age. He lived at 2 St David's Terrace, Edinburgh. He was a glass cutter by trade. His parents, William White, a baker, and Mary Dickson were deceased.

Janet Winton was a single woman of 24 years of age. She lived at 44 George Square Edinburgh, and was a domestic servant.

The marriage was registered on 9 June 1897 at Edinburgh, Thomas Temple being the registrar.
