'Norminnie Gordon' as her birth certificate had it, was born in November 1877. Her father, George, notified the registrar at Dalkeith, J. B. Dyer, on 12 December of that year.

Normina was aged 3 years, and living with her parents and family at Liberton, Edinburgh, when recorded by the 1881 census. She had been born at Dalkeith, Edinburgh.

The 1891 census recorded Normina living in Linlithgow with her parents and siblings. She was aged 13 years and not employed. She had been born in Dalkeith.

In 1901, Normina was recorded, aged 23 years, by the census of that year. She was a servant, a 'House Tablemaid Domestic', at 46 Polwarth Terrace, the home, in the Merchiston district of Edinburgh, of a 44 year old, single lady living on her own means, Miss Margaret M. A. Smith, and her two equally single nieces in their twenties, Ethel and Adeline Grant. The house had twelve windowed rooms, and the household boasted two servants, a cook as well as Normina. Her birthplace was recorded as Cowderfoot, Midlothian.

A woman named Normina Gordon left Scotland for Canada in 1909. She was recorded on the passenger list as a a domestic servant:
