  General Notes:

When George was born in 1876, both his mother, Normina Winton, and his father, George Gordon, a police constable, gave notice of his birth and signed his birth certificate. The birth was registered on 3 May 1876 at Edinburgh before George McArthur, registrar.

George was aged 4 years when recorded by the 1881 census. He was the second of five children living with George and Normina Gordon at Liberton in Edinburgh. He was a 'scholar' and had been born in North Leith, Edinburgh.

In 1891 the census for Linlithgow recorded George, the eldest of the children recorded, living with his parents at 32 Low Port. His birthplace was recorded as Edinburgh, and his age as 15 years. He was an 'apprentice draper' by occupation.

The 1901 census for Midcalder recorded george Gordon and his wife living at 17 Old Rows. George was a general labourer in an oilworks. He was recorded as 24 years old and had been born in "Abbeyhill Edinburghshire". His wife was 25 years old and had been born in Shotts, Lanarkshire.

George notified the registrar at Liberton, Midlothian, of his father's death in 1929.

George Wright Gordon died in 1953. In his death certificate he was recorded as a retired oilworks refinery foreman, married to Margaret Simpson. His recorded age at death was 77 years. Both of his parents were already dead. 2

D. Gordon, George Gordon's son, of 54 Lea Rig, Forth, Lanarkshire, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, M.G.Chapman, at East Calder on 26 October 1953. 3

George married Margaret SIMPSON, daughter of George SIMPSON and Margaret LAIRD, on 26 June 1900 in The Manse, Mid Calder, Midlothian, Scotland.1 (Margaret SIMPSON was born 21 October 1875 at 6.00 am in Dykehead, Shotts parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland,1 5 6 died 13 January 1965 at 8.00 am in 32 Uphall Station Road, Pumpherston, East Calder, Midlothian, Scotland 7 and was buried on 15 January 1965 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland 4.). The cause of her death was carcinoma of mamillary sinus and metastases.3


  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place, after banns, according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The minister was D. J. Moir Porteous BD, Minister of Mid Calder. The witnesses were James Gordon and Marion Simpson.

George Gordon was an unmarried man of 24 years of age. He worked as an oilwork labourer, and lived at Lagandarroch House, Pumpherston, Mid Calder.

Margaret Simpson was also 24 years of age and unmarried. She lived at 63 Pumpherston, Mid Calder, and worked as a domestic servant.

The marriage was registered on 27 June 1900 at Mid Calder, Samuel Hislop being the registrar. 1
