David was the illegitimate son of Normina Winton, later Gordon. His father was Thomas Philip, a coal miner, and both mother's and father's names appear on his birth certificate along with their signatures. Normina was a worker at a carpet factory at the time. The birth was registered at Cockpen on 31 January 1871 before Peter Mitchell, registrar.

The 1871 census for Redrow, Bonnyrigg, in Cockpen registration district, recorded David Phillips, aged 3 months, living with his mother and grandparents. His birthplace was noted as Cockpen.

'David Gordon' was recorded as the eldest child of George Gordon and his wife, when the Gordon family were recorded by the 1881 census, living in Dalkeith Road (Police Station), Liberton, Edinburgh. He was a 'scholar' and aged 10 years. He had been born in Cockpen, Edinburgh. 2 3
