  General Notes:

When William Gordon was born in 1884, it was his father George, a labourer in an oil works, who registered his son's birth. He gave notice before the registrar, William Cochrane, at Liberton on 10 July 1884.

The 1891 census recorded William living in Linlithgow. He was aged 6 years and a scholar. Like his brother Alexander he had been born in Gilmerton.

William was recorded as aged 17 years by the 1901 census. He was a general labourer like his father and his brother, James, and lived with them and his mother at Lagandorach Place, Pumpherston, Mid Calder. He had been born in Gilmerton, Edinburgh.

By 1911 William Winton Gordon was working as a colliery electrician in Hetton le Hole, County Durham. The 1911 census recorded William, his wife Mary and their daughter, Normina, living at The Lyons, Hetton le Hole. The couple had been married for three years and Normina was their only child. William's age was noted as 26 years and his birthplace as Gilmerton, Midlothian.

  Research Notes:

HETTON COLLIERY

This was also known as Hetton Lyon's Colliery or just Lyon's Colliery. It was situated six miles east north east of Durham. It opened in 1822 and closed in 1850. In 1911 it was owned by Hampton and Hetton Collieries Ltd. At that time it produced coking, gas and household coal and employed over 900 men.
