When John's son, also John, was born in March 1855, he was born at Gartness Iron Works. John senior was the informant of the birth and made his X mark. He was a 'pudler' by occupation and aged 26 years. This birth certificate noted also John's place of birth and year and place of marriage.
In 1856 when his daughter Sarah Anne was born at the Mossend Works in the parish of Bothwell, John O'Neil was the informant of her birth before James Hunter, registrar, at Bothwell on 23 July 1856 and made his X mark. His occupation was recorded on her death certificate as 'puddler at Iron Works'.
When his daughter Sarah Anne died in 1857 John O'Neil was recorded in her death certificate as a 'mineral labourer
The 1861 census for Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, recorded John O'Niel [sic] as the head of a household living in Mossend village. With John lived his wife, Sarah, their four young children, John's mother, Mary and a 22 year old Irish born lodger, Edward McGraw, who was a labourer. John O'Niel by occupation was recorded as a puddler of iron. He was 31 years of age and had been born in Ireland. 2 3

John married Sara ROURKE, daughter of Charles ROURKE in Ballywholan County Tyrone and Mary O'NEILL, on 10 November 1852 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Sara ROURKE was born in Ballywholan, County Tyrone, Ireland and was baptised on 8 February 1824 in Coalisland parish, County Tyrone, Ireland 4.)
