Sarah was recorded as aged 27 years when her first child John's birth was registered in 1855. It also stated where and when she was born, and the place and year of her marriage.
In 1857 Sarah was the informant of the death of her daughter Sarah aged 20 months, where she had been present. She made her X mark. Curiously, possibly from a misunderstanding, her name was recorded on the certificate as 'Sarah O'Neil MS O'Neil'.
The 1861 census for Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, recorded John O'Niel [sic] as the head of a household living in Mossend village. With John lived his wife, Sarah, their four young children, John's mother, Mary and a 22 year old Irish born lodger. Sarah O'niel was recorded as 33 years of age and had been born in Ireland. 3 4
Research Notes:
PLACE OF BIRTH
Sarah was probably born in Ballywholan in Ballyclog parish in County Tyrone. This is north of Coalisland where she was baptised, and near Stewartstown.
POSSIBLE RELATIVE
Sarah was married in New Monkland parish in New Monkland parish. James Rourk married Mary Tonnor there less than 18 months later. They may be related: brother and sister, or cousins. We know the father of James was called Francis, so he may be Sarah's father too, or an uncle. Arguing against this possibility are the ages of the two individuals. From the information we have there seems to have been about twenty years of an age difference, although building a castle on ages, which are so uncertain and open to inaccuracy, is not advisable. If the age difference is true, James could be her uncle.
Sara married John O'NEILL Iron puddler, son of Francis O'NEILL in Killeshill, County Tyrone and Mary McGOOGIN, on 10 November 1852 in St Margaret's RC Church, Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (John O'NEILL Iron puddler was born in Sixmilecross, County Tyrone, Ireland and was baptised on 21 June 1831 in Killeshill RC parish, County Tyrone, Ireland 5.)
Marriage Notes:
Fr Duncan McNab married this couple. The witneses were Terence McIlhone and Bridget Stewart.
The earlier date recorded in the IGI was probably the banns of marriage. 1
