O'NEIL, John

  • Born: 22 March 1855 at 8.45 pm, Gartness Iron Works, Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Another name for John was O'NIEL, John.1

  General Notes:

John was the first child of his parents. His father, John, who had been present where the birth took place, gave notice of his birth, and made his X mark.

The 1861 census for Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, recorded John O'Niel [sic] as the head of a household living in Mossend village. With John lived his wife, Sarah, their four young children, John's mother, Mary and a 22 year old Irish born lodger. The eldest child, John O'Niel, was recorded as 6 years of age and had been born in Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Amazingly for a child so young he worked as a puddler server. 1

  Research Notes:

John's birth certificate was issued in the first year of statutory certification of births, deaths and marriages in Scotland. This was a longer and more detailed birth certificate than that issued later. As a result we have his parents' ages and places of birth, year and place of marriage, and the number of children in the family to date.
