In the 1851 census, a 'Sarah Feely' was recorded as the granddaughter of John and Roseanne Feely in whose household she was living. Her age was noted as 17 years, she was unmarried, and she had been born in Ireland. Her occupation was recorded as tambourer. The relationship noted here contradicts that given in the 1861 entry. It may be that she was a granddaughter who, for whatever reason, lived with her grandparents as their daughter.

In 1855 Sarah's daughter, Annie, was born. Annie's birth certificate recorded that her mother, Sarah Murray, maiden surname Fielding [sic], was aged 22 years and had been born in County Armagh, Ireland. Annie was her first child.

Sarah Murray was living with her husband and children in her father's household in Carluke when recorded by the 1861 census. Her age was noted as 28 years and her birthplace as Ireland.

When Sarah Murray died in 1899 her recorded age was 67 years. She was recorded in her death certificate as 'Sarah Murray hawker widow of ---- Murray carter'. The only parent's name included, tentatively it seemed, in the death certificate was '---- O'Hare'. Since the informant was a sanitary inspector then, that is not particularly surprising. 1 3 4 8

  Research Notes:

NEW CAMP
New Camp seems to have been in the Airbles Road/Avon Street part of Motherwell.

  Medical Notes:

Robert Robertson MB CM certified the causes of death.

Sarah's death was notified to the registrar, George Sneddon, on 17 March 1899 at Dalziel by James Reid, sanitary inspector. 8

Sarah married Edward MURRAY in January 1855 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 (Edward MURRAY was born about 1830 in County Wexford, Ireland 1 7 and died 17 October 1865 at 4.20 pm in Grammar School Square, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 11.). The cause of his death was typhus over 15 days.

  Marriage Notes:

No marriage for this couple has been found in Scotland. The date and place of January 1855 in Hamilton was recorded in the baptism of Annie Murray, the couple's first child. 1
