There is a birth certificate for a John Cairney, father Edward Cairney and mother Sarah Feely, born 17 January 1859 at Grammar School Square Hamilton, which is probably this person, since no other birth certificate in the name of John Murray, with parents as noted in the birth certificates of other Murray children, is extant. The 1861 census as noted below records the year and place of birth as 1859 Hamilton. Grammar School Square is the address at which the father Edward Murray died. Why he might have used an alias is not known.

The 1861 census for Carluke recorded John living there with his family. His age was noted as 2 years and his birthplace as Hamilton. ^{2 3}
