  General Notes:

The 1841 census recorded John living in Crompton Road in Riccarton parish, Ayrshire, the eldest child of the family, aged 13 years.

In the 1851 UK census for Riccarton parish, John George, 23years, a shoemaker, his wife Jean George, 21 years, and their son John George, 2 years, were living in Crompton Road.

The 1861 census return for Galston, Ayrshire, recorded John and Jean George living in Church Lane with their two sons, John, aged 12 years, and Samuel aged 2 years. John senior was a shoemaker, and John junior was a shoecloser. All were born in Ayrshire: the father at Riccarton, the mother and elder child in Kilmarnock, and the small child in Galston. There were two rooms in their house with at least one window. The age and birthplace of the youngest suggest the family may have moved to Galston a few years before the taking of the 1861 census.

John notified the registrar of his father's death in 1867, and signed the register that he was present where the death occurred, on 16 May 1867 at Riccarton.

Mary George died in 1888 at the age of 43 years. In her death certificate she was recorded as 'married to John George shoemaker (master)'. John George, who had been present where her death occurred, gave notice before the registrar, William Lindsay, on 16 April 1888 at Kilmaurs, and signed his name thereto.

In 1888 John George died. His death certificate recorded him as 'master shoemaker widower of 1] Jean Findlay 2] Jean Richmond 3] Mary Burns'. His recorded age at death was 61 years. His parents were deceased.

In the death certificate of his son Samuel in 1923, John George was recorded as 'shoemaker deceased'. 2 3 6 7 8 9

  Medical Notes:

Alexander Bryce MB CM certified the causes of death.

Samuel George, the deceased man's son who was present where the death occurred, gave notice of his father's death before the registrar, Allan Jackson, at Newmilns on 7 December 1888. 2

John married Jean FINLAY, daughter of David FINLAY and Jean SMITH, on 9 October 1846 in Riccarton parish, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Jean FINLAY was born on 3 January 1828 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 5 7, baptised on 25 February 1828 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland 5 and died before 25 July 1876.)

John next married Jean RICHMOND, daughter of Andrew RICHMOND and Mary YOUNG, on 25 July 1876 in Galston, Ayrshire, Scotland.2 (Jean RICHMOND was born on 26 January 1826 in Loudoun, Ayrshire, Scotland 10, baptised on 11 October 1828 in Loudoun, Ayrshire, Scotland 10 and died in 1885 10.)

John next married Mary BURNS, daughter of James BURNS and Elizabeth MORRISON, between 1885 and 1888. (Mary BURNS was born on 5 May 1838 in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland and died 15 April 1888 at 4.30 pm in Craig Cottages, Crosshouse, Ayrshire, Scotland.). The cause of her death was epilepsy over several years.2
