In 1851, the census for Riccarton parish, Ayrshire, recorded Moses George, head of the household, his wife Grizel, and their two children, Elizabeth and Samuel, living at Crompton Street. Moses was aged 51 years and had been born in County Down, Ireland. He was a shoemaker by occupation.

Moses was a shoemaker, according to the marriage certificate of his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1860.

The 1861 census for the parish of Riccarton recorded Moses and his wife, Grace, living in Crompton Street. Moses was recorded as aged 63 years and was a shoemaker. He had been born in Ireland. There were no children recorded living there with them. The house had one windowed room.

In his death certificate of 15 May 1867, Moses was recorded as a journeyman shoemaker. He was married to Grace Brown. He was recorded as 69 years old at death.   Research Notes:

SHOEMAKING

In 1837 hand shoemaking amounted in annual value to about £50,000 in Kilmarnock. Therefter it was replaced by steam power factories and modern industrial methods.

RELATIVES

Both Robert George and Samuel George were recorded living side by side in Crookedholm, a hamlet in Kilmarnock parish Ayrshire, in the enumerating district 1A of the 1841 census. Samuel was 10 years older than Robert. Moses George a shoemaker, the known brother of Samuel, lived in Riccarton nearby, and in age came about half way between them. The 1841 census recorded all of them as born in Ireland. Information from death certificates confirms Samuel and Moses as full brothers, Robert's father's given name is different, but his mother has the same surname as Samuel and Moses' mother. At this stage all were surnamed George, which Robert later changed to McGeorge. He also changed his birthplace to Scotland. Despite these confusions it seems a very distict possibility that Robert is a cousin or second cousin of Samuel and Moses, if not a brother. 13 14 15
