  • Marriage (1): GEORGE, Moses (DNA Linked)
  • Died: 17 April 1837, Newton on Ayr parish, Ayrshire, Scotland 3
  • Buried: 18 April 1837, Mauchline Cemetery, Ayrshire, Scotland 2

Cause of her death was frailty.4

  General Notes:

Margaret Reid was named in two death certificates as the wife of Moses George and the mother of Samuel and Moses George. In census evidence, these two were both recorded as having been born in Ireland, so Margaret may have been an Irish woman, possibly Northern Irish from her surname and that of her husband.

In a death register in the Newton On Ayr parish record, there is a death of 'M George' listed for 17 April 1837. She is further described as 'an old woman, a widow, aged 70' and her death was because of 'frailty'. More evidence may prove or disprove that this person was the mother of Samuel and Moses George. However we can say that the date and age given in the entry do not exclude Margaret George née Reid. A woman of 70 years of age in 1837 would have been born in 1866-1867, which is entirely compatible with a woman who was the mother of Samuel George born in 1790-1791.

Deaths

"April 17 M George an old woman, a widow (aged) 70 (cause) Frailty"

A woman called Margaret Reid was buried in Mauchline cemetery on 18 April 1837, about six miles from Crookedholm which may very well be this Margaret. It was pretty common for married women in Scotland to revert to their maiden name in widowhood. Unfortunately the burial record does not mention place of residence or age, but the dates do fit. 2 3 5

Margaret married Moses GEORGE (DNA Linked). (Moses GEORGE (DNA Linked) was born about 1755.)
