The entry in the Galston parish register for Jean's christening reads as follows:
"MILLAR
Jean daughter and 3rd child of William Miller [sic] and Elizabeth Jamie spouses Born 18 June Baptized 27 July 1836"

Note: The statement about Jean being third child seems to contradict the list of children we have for these parents. Perhaps she was the third child living?

The 1860 US Census for Washington Territory recorded Jane Quigley living with her husband and three small children at Lake River in Clark County. Jane was noted as 22 years of age and born in Scotland. Her occupation was noted, as was that of her husband, as 'farmer'.

James and Jane Quickly were living in Portland Oregon with their eight children ranging in age from 14 years to one year, as recorded by the 1870 census for Oregon, Multnomah County. Jane was noted as 32 years of age and born in Scotland. She kept house. Like James she was recorded as having parents of foreign birth.

In 1880 Jane Quickley was recorded, aged 43 years, living with her husband and nine of her children in Willamette Slough in Multnomah County, Oregon. 'Keeping House' was her occupation. Her birthplace and that of her parents was recorded as Scotland. ^{3 4 5}

Jean married James QUIGLY (DNA Link), son of John QUIGLY (DNA Linked) and Catharine LYNAS (DNA Linked), on 29 February 1856 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. (James QUIGLY (DNA Link) was born on 16 June 1830 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland ³, baptised on 20 June 1830 in St Mirin's RC Chapel, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, died on 27 February 1911 in 585 Mississippi Avenue, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA ^{4 5 6 9 10} and was buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA ¹¹.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage took place in Kilmarnock according to the rites and forms of the Roman Catholic Church. The marriage was solemnised by Fr John McLachlan RCC. The witnesses were Agnes Crawford and Catherine Paterson.

The groom, James Quigley, who made his X mark, was an unmarried man of 24 years, a coal miner, living at Titchfield Street Galston. James's father was deceased and his mother living.

The bride, Jean Millar, was aged 19 years, of Titchfield Street Galston, and was an unmarried woman working as a cotton weaver. She signed her name. Both of her parents were alive.

The marriage was registered at Kilmarnock on 3 March 1856, James S. Gregory being the signing registrar.

Note:There is an odd thing about this entry. The index says the marriage is between James Quigley and Jean Millar. The certificate itself, however, has written 'James Millar' instead of 'Jean Millar'. The handwriting of the two versions of 'James' are identical. Perhaps it was connected with the fact that the marriage took place on Leap Day!
