  General Notes:

Catherine, probably called after her paternal grandmother, was born on a summer evening in Galston. Her father, James, who had been present, notified the registrar, William Bell, at Galston on 16 June 1856, and made his X mark. Catherine was the name of the mother of James Quigley.

The Catherine Quigley born in 1856 was not listed with the rest of the family in their entry in the 1860 US Census for Clark County in Washington Territory. A child named Elizabeth was listed, of the same birth year. Elizabeth was the name of the child's mother. Then another child was born to this couple in 1862 in Oregon and was named Catharine. She was the first female child to be born after Catherine/Elizabeth. A likely solution is that there was a misunderstanding about the father's registration of her as Catherine, or the name was rejected by her mother, who may have wanted to name her after her own mother. The official registration within the newly introduced statutory system could not be revoked easily, and the child's name was simply changed to Elizabeth. Within one of the Scots traditions of naming of the time the first female child was called after her mother's mother. The second female child was called after the father's mother. Perhaps that's what James Quigley got wrong in 1856!

Elizabeth Quigley was recorded as aged 4 years by the 1860 US census for Washington Territory where she lived with her family at Lake River in Clark County. She had been born in Scotland.

The 1870 census for Multnomah County, Oregon recorded Elizabeth Quickly living with her family in Portland. She was 14 years of age and had been born in Scotland. She was 'at home', that is not in any occupation. She had attended school within the year. She was noted as being unable to write.

The 1910 US Census for Multnomah County recorded James A Kelly, aged 51 years, Lizabeth R Kelly, 52 years, and their children Jenevie Kelly, aged 23 years and George G Kelly, aged 18 years, living on Hawthorne in Portland Ward 7, Multnomah, Oregon. A nephew Walter J Quigley aged 15 years, probably the son of Lizabeth's brother Arthur, also lived with the family. Lizabeth had had three children, all of whom were living. The couple had been married for 29 years. james was an operator on a bridge, jenevie was a bookkeeper in a telephone exchange, and George was a cashier in a car works. 4 9 12
