QUIGLEY, James

   Cause of his death was typhus over 14 days.

   Other names for James were QUIGLY, James, TWEEDLIE, James, TWEEDLY, James ⁴ and TWIGLEY, James.

  General Notes:

The 1851 census records James and Martha Quigley and their four children, aged from 7 to 4 months, living at 4 Buchanan Court in the new suburb of Laurieston, south of the river Clyde. James was aged 30 years. He was a labourer in a foundry. All of the family except the two youngest children listed were born in Ireland.

James Quigley was the informant of the birth of his daughter Elizabeth in 1855. He gave notice before William Barclay, registrar, at Calton on 11 May 1855, and made his X mark. It being an 1855 certificate, additional biographical details were included than in latercertificates. James was a hammerman by occupation. He was aged 35 years and had been born in Coleraine in Ireland. He was married to Martha Ross in County Derry, Ireland in 1843.

James was the informant of the birth of his daughter Margaret on 2 July 1858. He gave notice before the registrar at Glasgow on 10 July 1858 and made his X mark. He described his occupation as hammerman.

James was the informant of his wife, Martha's death in July 1858. She was recorded in her death certificate as the 'wife of a hammerman'. James made his X mark.

In 1861, towards the end of the year, James himself died. His death certificate described him first by occupation 'hammerman', then as 'married to Jane Porter'. No mention was made of Martha Ross - but no marriage certificate has yet been found for James and Jane Porter. James was recorded as aged 40 years at his death. His usual residence was noted as 21 Main Street, Calton. Both of his parents were deceased.

The Application for Parish Relief made in December 1861 by Jean Porter, second 'wife' and 'widow' of James Quigley, did not actually state that he had been married earlier to Martha Ross, but the facts of the case fit comfortably.

James was described as a hammerman by occupation, in the marriage certificate of his son Edward in 1863.

James was deceased when his daughter Mary married in 1866. He was referred to in her marriage certificate as 'James Tweedlie blacksmith hammerman deceased'.

In 1875 when his daughter Martha was married, James Tweedly(sic) was already deceased. His occupation in her marriage certificate is difficult to read but does look like 'marine stoker'- clearly not in accord with other records. ^{1 2 3 5 6 7}

Jane Quigley, widow, informed the registrar, Peter Ferguson, at Glasgow on 6 December 1861 of the death of James. ³

James married Martha ROSS in 1843 in County Derry, Ireland.¹ (Martha ROSS was born about 1823 in County Derry, Ireland, died 13 July 1858 at 7.45 am in 35 King Street, Calton, Glasgow, Scotland ⁸ and was buried in Southern Necropolis, Glasgow, Scotland ⁸.). The cause of her death was puerperal fever over 13 days.

James next married Jean PORTER on 15 April 1859 in Blythswood, Glasgow, Scotland.² (Jean PORTER was born in 1835 in Dove Hill, Glasgow, Scotland.)

The poor relief application stated that the Rev Mr Gault married Jean and James Quigley on 15 April 1859. ²
