   Other names for Jean were PORTER, Jane and QUIGLEY, Jane.

  General Notes:

James Quigley died on 4 December 1861. Jean, or Jane, Porter gave notice of his death on 6 December 1861 at Glasgow. Although the details of the death certificate infer a marriage: 'married to Jane Porter' and 'Jane Quigley, widow', no statutory marriage has yet been found.

APPLICATION FOR PARISH RELIEF
Jean Porter made her application for parochial relief to Barony parish on December 11 1861.

She was declared to be aged 26 and the widow of James Quigley. Her current place of residence was 21 Main Street C(alton), but she had been born at Dove Hill, G(lasgow). The reason for her application was the death of her husband, since she herself had no occupation bar domestic ones, and the children of the family, six names given, were resident with her.

In the 'residences' summary of the application the following information was given:

present house since May 1861 BARONY PARISH 6 months
prior 35 King Street GLASGOW 11 years

settlement: GLASGOW admitted 13 January 1862

In conclusion, it stated
Proceedings subsequent to pauper being enrolled:
Dec 11 Notice to Glasgow
Dec 12 Roll 3/- WCW
Dec 21 Stat to Glasgow

A final note was added 'now married to James Paton' re record 2/4613'. 1


Jean married James QUIGLEY, son of Edward QUIGLEY and Mary CRAIG, on 15 April 1859 in Blythswood, Glasgow, Scotland.1 (James QUIGLEY was born about 1820 in Coleraine, County Derry, Ireland 2 and died 4 December 1861 at 11.00 pm in Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland 3.). The cause of his death was typhus over 14 days.


  Marriage Notes:

The poor relief application stated that the Rev Mr Gault married Jean and James Quigley on 15 April 1859. 1
