  General Notes:

We do not know where Mary Jane Bothwell was born. However since her brother, George, was born in Carlingford, County Louth, it may be that she was born there too.

The informant of Annie's birth was her mother Mary Jane Kane, who signed her name to the notice. This can be seen on the certificate copy. The birth was registered on 17 March 1885 at Greenock.

In Margaret Kane's marriage certificate of 1906, her mother was recorded as 'Jane Fulton previously Kane MS Bothwell'.

When Jane Fulton died in 1925 she was recorded in her death certificate as aged 68 years old at death. She was the widow first of Thomas Kane mill stoker, and secondly of William Fulton factory stoker. Both of her parents were deceased.

In 1950 in Samuel Kane's death certificate, his mother was recorded as 'Mary Jane Kane afterwards Fulton MS Bothwell'. ^{4 11 12 13}

Sam Kane, Jane's son, of 13 Bruce Street, gave notice of his mother's death before the registrar at Greenock on 25 June 1925.

Mary married Thomas KANE, son of Frederick KANE and Susan CALDWELL, on 3 January 1880 in Killowen, County Derry, Ireland.¹ (Thomas KANE was born about 1860 and died 4 July 1887 at 11.30 pm in Infirmary, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland ⁹.). The cause of his death was otorrhea, meningitis and jaundice.

  Marriage Notes:

The Church Marriage Record listed in the database of the Irish Family History Foundation records a marriage between Thomas Kain and Mary Jane Bothwell as having taken place on 3 January 1880. Both parties were recorded as belonging to the Church of Ireland. No specific venue was noted as the place of marriage except the parish name, Killowen, and the county, Co. Derry, but under 'Address' Thomas Kain's entry recorded 'Burnside', and listed for Mary Jane Bothwell was 'Somerset'.

The Church entry also recorded the status of each party being married: 'Bachelor (Previously unmarried' and 'Spinster (Previously unmarried). He was 20 years old; she 22 years old. The names of their fathers were Frederick Kain and Samuel Bothwell. No names were entered for the mothers of the bride and groom. Frederick Kain was recorded as a labourer; Samuel Bothwell was a farmer.

Occupations were noted for the bride and groom: Thomas Kain was a labourer and Mary Jane Bothwell was a servant.

Two witnesses were named. Witness 1 was recorded as Matthew McDougall. Witness 2 was Andrew Kain.

Note: Coleraine has enlarged since the date of this marriage and some of the place names mentioned are absorbed into the town and suburbs.

Somerset was a townland in Macosquin parish, county Derry.

This quotation gives some information about Burnside, which seems to have been near Coleraine on the Killowen road:

"About the year 1700 the first building, to replace the ancient Church which had been confiscated, was erected. It was known as the " Wayside Chapel," and
was situated at Burnside, nearer to Coleraine than the old " Mass Walk," and quite close to the present site of 'Chapelfield' House, now the residence of Mr. Hercules Hughes. The old Chapel stood on the right-hand side of the road leading from Killowen to Burnside, and a well still marks the spot near to which it was built. The south gable of the building was about 40 feet from this well. When the " Wayside Chapel" was subsequently vacated for the new Church on the present site, the old building was converted by the lord of the soil into four
labourers' cottages. It had never been a very pretentious building, being a plain house, 50 feet long by 16 feet wide, and having a thatched roof."

Mary next married William FULTON, son of William FULTON and Margaret GRAHAM, on 24 December 1895 in 28 Crawford Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.² (William FULTON was born on 3 October 1842 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland ¹⁶.)

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The witnesses were Allan McIntosh and Catherine McVean.

The groom was a widower aged 53 years. He resided at 38 Crawford Street Greenock. He worked as a cabinet factory fireman. His father and mother were deceased.

The bride was a widow and aged 40 years. She shared the same address as the groom. No occupation was noted for her. Both of her parents were deceased.

The marriage was registered on 26 December 1896 at Greenock. ²
