FULTON, William ¹

  General Notes:

In an Old Parish Register for the parish of Beith, Ayrshire, can be found information about the birth of William Fulton and three of his siblings. The record itself is dated 1854, and no word of the baptism of the children is included, therefore it may simply be a minister recording the births of children in his parish who may or may not have been baptized outside the Established Church of Scotland. The youngest of William's siblings, Mary, is recorded as having been born on 16th March 1854, so that may have been the occasion for recording all of the children in the family. The entry reads:

William, lawful son of William Fulton, Weaver in Town and Margaret Graham spouses, born 3rd Octr. 1842"

William Fulton was recorded as 13 years of age in the 1855 death certificate of his mother Margaret Graham.

1901 Census:
William Fulton was recorded as head of one of the households living at 28 Crawford Street Greenock. He worked as a fireman in a factory and was recorded as 58 years old and born in Beith Ayrshire. His wife Jane was 42 years old and had been born in Ireland. His son, Thomas Kane (sic), and daughters Jessie Fulton and May C. Fulton also lived in the household. They were 9 years, 5 years and 2 years respectively and had all been born in Greenock. All were at school. Separated from the main household, but a part of it were two lodgers: David Laird a widower of 73 years who was a factory labourer and had been born in Johnstone; and Samuel Kane, a single man aged 20 years, who worked as a wood turner and had been born in Greenock. The latter was in fact the son of Jane Fulton by a previous marriage. The main household had the benefit of two windowed rooms, the lodgers of one.

1911 Census:
William Fulton was the head of a household of seven persons, including himself, living at 18 Crawford Street Greenock, a dwelling that had two rooms with one or more windows. The rest of the household consisted of William's wife Jane, Thomas Kane designated 'step-son', Jane and Mary Fulton the daughters of William and Jane, and two boarders named Robert and Betsy Harvey. William was born in Beith Ayrshire, Jane in Ireland, and the others in Greenock Scotland. Their ages were recorded as follows: William 68 years, Jane 54 years, Thomas 20 years, Jane 15 years, Mary 12 years, Robert 34 years and Betsy 9 years. The younger members were single, William and Jane married, and Robert a widower. As for occupations, the three younger people were at school and the elder Jane did not work outside the house. William was a motorman in a shipbuilding yard, Thomas was a general labourer with Greenock Corporation, and Robert was a painter in a shipbuilding yard.

In the 1913 marriage of his daughter Jane, William Fulton was recorded as a shipyard stoker.

In 1918 William Fulton was recorded in the marriage certificate of his daughter Mary as having been a factory stoker, for he was deceased by then. ^{3 4 5 6}

William married Mary Jane BOTHWELL, daughter of Samuel BOTHWELL and Jane MORTON, on 24 December 1895 in 28 Crawford Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland.¹ (Mary Jane BOTHWELL was born about 1857 in Ireland and died 25 June 1925 at 5.45 am in 18 Crawford Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland ⁷.). The cause of her death was bronchitis and cardiac disease.

  Marriage Notes:

The marriage was celebrated according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. The witnesses were Allan McIntosh and Catherine McVean.

The groom was a widower aged 53 years. He resided at 38 Crawford Street Greenock. He worked as a cabinet factory fireman. His father and mother were deceased.

The bride was a widow and aged 40 years. She shared the same address as the groom. No occupation was noted for her. Both of her parents were deceased.

The marriage was registered on 26 December 1896 at Greenock. ¹
