BOTHWELL OR KANE, Thomas 1

  • Born: 27 August 1890 at 4.00 pm, 3 Market Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland 1

  General Notes:

John and Thomas Bothwell or Kane have been placed here as the children of William Fulton, though they were not given a father's name at all when their births were registered. It is plausible that he was their father, but still possible that it was someone else. In the little evidence we have, Thomas seemed to have been treated by William Fulton as a step-son at the very least, but certainly included in the family group. On the other hand, Thomas did not carry the name of Fulton, as one might have thought he would had he been William's natural son.

The birth certificate of Thomas and his twin John in 1890 recorded that they were illegitimate. Their mother was noted as being 'Jane Bothwell widow of Samuel Kane labourer who died in 1887'. Their surname was recorded therefore as 'Bothwell or Kane', the two names presumably, by which their mother might be known. No information of their father was recorded. The informant on 8 September 1890 before the registrar at Greenock was a friend, Mary Hickey, of Market Street.

In the 1901 census 'Thomas Kane' was living at 28 Crawford Street Greenock as the son of William Fulton and Jane his mother. On the other hand Samuel Kane, Jane's son by William Rattray, was living at the same address but as a lodger. This suggests that the twins Jane gave birth to in 1890 were in fact illegitimate sons of William Fulton, afterwards recognised by their father. However Thomas was still called Thomas Kane, so some doubt does remain.

In the 1911 census Thomas Kane is recorded as the step-son of William Fulton. 1
