BOTHWELL OR KANE, John 1

  • Born: 27 August 1890 at 2.45 pm, 3 Market Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland 1
  • Died: 27 October 1890 at 7.30 am, 3 Market Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland 2

Cause of his death was debility.2

  General Notes:

John and Thomas Bothwell or Kane have been placed here as the children of William Fulton, though they were not given a father's name at all when their births were registered. It is plausible that he was their father, but still possible that it was someone else. No hint was given in his death certificate of who his father had been.

The birth certificate of Thomas and his twin John in 1890 recorded that they were illegitimate. Their mother was noted as being 'Jane Bothwell widow of Samuel Kane labourer who died in 1887'. Their surname was recorded therefore as 'Bothwell or Kane', the two names presumably, by which their mother might be known. No information of their father was recorded. The informant on 8 September 1890 before the registrar at Greenock was a friend, Mary Hickey, of Market Street.

John was not listed with his family in the 1901 census. 1 2

  Medical Notes:

John C. Douglas MB certified the cause of death.

Jane Kane, mother of the deceased child who had been present where his death occurred, gave notice of his death before the registrar at Greenock on 29 October 1890 and made her X mark. 2
