HAMES George shoemaker and Isabella Muat had a son born 27 February and baptized 12 March 1820 named Charles witnesses Thomas and George Muat"

In 1841 the census for St John's Haddington East Lothian recorded Charles Haimes living in Church Street with his mother and siblings Thomas, John and Jean. Charles was placed in the 20-24 years age category, like his brother Thomas but coming after him, and had been born in the county in which he was living. He was a bootmaker by trade.

In 1851 the census for Duns in Berwickshire recorded Charles Haimes living as a lodger at 60 Castle Street (east side) at the home of John and Agnes Brown, a shoemaker aged 31 years and his mother, aged 64 years. John was an unmarried man born in Dunse and had four workmen in his shoemaking enterprise. Agnes Brown had been born in Yetholm, Roxburghshire. Charles Haimes himself was a journeyman shoemaker. He was recorded as aged 29 years and had been born in Haddington.

The 1861 census for Duns parish Berwickshire recorded Charles and Elizabeth Hamies [sic], aged 41 and 40 years, living at 30 North Castle Street with their four sons, George, Robert, Charles and James, aged from 7 years to 8 months. Charles was a shoemaker.

In 1871 Charles Haimes, a widower, was living in High Street, Haddington, with his three sons George, Robert and Charles.

The 1881 census recorded Charles, a shoemaker aged 61 years, and his sons Charles, a tailor aged 22 years, and James C., a printer aged 15 years, living together in Haddington.

In 1882, the marriage certificate of his son Charles recorded Charles senior as a shoemaker. 3 4 5 6 7 8


Charles married Elisabeth Hay CARLYLE on 25 January 1853 in Duns, Berwickshire, Scotland.1 (Elisabeth Hay CARLYLE was born about 1821 in Spott, East Lothian, Scotland 2 6 and died on 7 October 1866 in Haddington, East Lothian, Scotland 2.)
