The census for 1841 recorded Robert Winton with his wife Helen and their four children, none of these relationships actually stated by the census, living at Henderson's Cottages in Cowpen, a village in Northumberland not far from Blyth. Robert was recorded as aged 35 years and his occupation was noted as engineer. He had been born in Scotland. His brother, James, lived there too, (q.v), and was referred to as an ' ditto (Engineer) inmate'.

When his daughter, Elizabeth Robertson Winton, was baptized in March 1844 the entry in the baptismal register of St Cuthbert's recorded Robert Winton as an 'engineer residing at no 88 Canongate'.

Robert's daughter, Catherine, was married in 1857 in Edinburgh. Robert was recorded then as an 'engineer deceased'.

Robert's son James married in 1861. In his marriage certificate, his father, Robert Winton, was recorded as 'engineer (deceased)'.

At the second marriage of his daughter, Cathrin Winton or Traghiam, in 1872, the marriage certificate recorded her father, Robert Winton, as an 'engine fitter deceased'.

In the death certificate of his daughter, Helen, in 1884, Robert Winton was recorded as a 'mechanical engineer deceased'.

Robert Winton's daughter, Catherine, died in 1914. In her death certificate it was recorded that her parents, Robert and Helen Winton, were both deceased, that her father had been an engineer, and that her mother's name before marriage was Helen Webster.

In 1916 James Winton, Robert's son, died. Robert Winton was recorded in the death certificate as 'Robert Winton slater deceased'. The informant was James Winton, son of James Winton.
