GIVEN NAME

The given name of the mother of William Guild's children in their baptism records is noted variously as Agnes, Agness or Anne. Her surname is always recorded as Young. In the couple's marriage record her name is noted as Ann Young.

"Annas" is an older way of writing the more modern name of Agnes. The double "nn" letter appears to indicate the sound that the tilde mark over a Spanish "n" indicate, a kind of "ny" sound. This name has often been transcribed as our modern Ann, Anne or Anna, but it was originally wht we now term "Agnes".

Separately from this point, it should be noted that children may be baptised and given one name but regularly referred to by another name, or another form of the name, by family and friends.

Ann married William GOOLD, son of Alexander GWILD and Margaret HILL, on 21 April 1776 in Edinburgh parish, Edinburgh, Scotland. (William GOOLD was baptised on 15 January 1753 in Denny, Stirlingshire, Scotland ^{2 3} and died before 1798 ⁴.)
