The census for 1841 recorded Robert Winton with his wife Helen and their four children, living at Henderson's Cottages in Cowpen, a village in Northumberland not far from Blyth. James Winton, the youngest of the children, was recorded as aged 9 months and had been born in Northumberland, England.
The 1851 census for St Cuthbert's parish Edinburgh recorded a 9 year old boy called James Winton as an inmate in the St Cuthbert's Charity Workhouse. Although the boy's place of birth was noted as Canongate, Edinburgh, it may very well be this James Winton.
In 1857, James Winton was a witness at the marriage of his sister, Catherine, to John Tragheim in Edinburgh.
In 1871 James and Margaret Winton were living with their three children, Robert, James and Alexander at 35 Leith Street in Edinburgh. James, aged 30 years and born in England, was an engine fitter at a works. His wife was 33 years old and had been born in Edinburgh. Robert was 7 years old, James 3 years, and Alexander 1 year old, and all were born in Edinburgh.
The 1881 census recorded james and Margaret Winton and their five children living at 16 Chapel Street Edinburgh. James, an engineer fitter, was recorded as aged 40 years and born in Low Cowpen, Northumberland, England. Margaret Winton, aged 38 years, and her children, Robert, aged 18 years, James, aged 14 years, Alexander, aged 12 years, Amelia C., aged 9 years, and Jessie, aged 5 years, were all born in Edinburgh.
In 1891, the census for the St Cuthbert's district of Edinburgh recorded James Winton as head of the household at 33 Richmond Place. He lived there with his wife, his son, and two daughters. James Winton was recorded as 50 years of age and born in England. He worked as an engine fitter.
When James Winton, brother of Robert Winton and therefore uncle of this James Winton, died in 1892 the informant was 'James Winton, nephew of the deceased'. He notified the registrar at Edinburgh, R. W. Charlton, on 11 June 1892 of his uncle's death.
