The census for 1841 recorded Robert Winton with his wife, Helen, and their four children, living at Henderson's Cottages in Cowpen, a village in Northumberland not far from Blyth. Alexander Winton, second eldest of the children, was recorded as aged 8 years and had been born in Scotland.

In 1851, Helen Winton and Alexander Winton were recorded by the census of that year living with an aunt and uncle, Isabella and Robert Wilson, a hatter, at 19/1 Salisbury Street, in the St Cuthbert's district of Edinburgh. Both were unmarried and were recorded as having been born in Edinburgh. Helen was aged 20 years and Alexander 18 years. Alexander was recorded as an engineer by occupation.

In 1871 Alic Winton was resident in Norwich, son in law of Elizabeth Warner head of household at Royal Hotel Branch Public House, Norwich. He was a widower.

The 1881 census for Norwich, Norfolk recorded John H. Kahler, a widower, living as the head of a household in Bloomsbury Place, in the parish of St Peter Parmentergate. He was a baker and grocer by occupation, aged 82 years, and, a naturalised British subject, had been born in Mecklenburg, Germany. With him lived "Sarah E. Winton" his daughter, a baker's assistant born in Clerkenwell, London, aged 51 years, married to Alexander Winton, also 51 years old, a railway engineer, born in Glasgow Scotland [sic], and John's granddaughter aged 30 years, Sophia Kahler, born in Hoxton, London.
Note: There seems to be some confusion, arising possibly from the age of the head of the household. It was Sophia Elizabeth Kahler, daughter of John H. Kahler was married to Alexander Winton. Alexander was not born in Glasgow.

When Alexander Winton died in Norwich in 1892, he was recorded as having been 61 years of age at death. 3 4 5 7 8

Alexander next married Sophia Elizabeth KAHLER, daughter of Johannes Heinrich Croman KAHLER and Elizabeth HARRIS, on 9 August 1874 in St Mary Stoke, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.1 (Sophia Elizabeth KAHLER was born on 10 June 1829 in St Luke's, Paddington, London, England 6 10 and died on 28 July 1920 in Norwich, Norfolk, England 6.)
