No baptism record has been found for Robert Ballantyne as yet.
In 1856,1859,1863 and 1868 John Ballantyne was recorded as a coal miner.
The 1861 census for Shotts parish Lanarkshire recorded Robert and Eliz Ballantine and their two children, Agnes aged 4 years and Thomas aged 2 years, living at Salsburgh. Two boarders also formed part of the household. Robert was 32 years old and had been born in Thornhill Dumfriesshire. He worked as a coal miner.
Robert Ballantine, son of the deceased man and who was present where Thomas died, gave notice of his death before the registrar at Holytown on 9 June 1863.
Robert Ballantine died aged 31 years in 1870. He was recorded as married to Elizabeth Shearer. His eldest son Thomas was the informant of his death before the registrar at Shotts on 25 June 1870. Thomas was recorded as "Eldest Son Inmate Present" on the death certificate. No mother's name was recorded for Robert and his father's name was mistakenly noted as "Robert Ballantine Iron Miner (deceased)".
Robert Ballantyne was recorded as a "coal miner (deceased)" in his son John's marriage certificate of 1891-2 and as such again later in John's death certificate of 1928. 6 7 9 10 12 15 16 17 18
Robert married Elizabeth SHEARER, daughter of John SHEARER and Agnes McDEDD, on 16 March 1855 in Chapelhall, Holytown district, Bothwell parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 2 3 (Elizabeth SHEARER was born on 15 September 1834 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland 4 9 13 14 19 20 and died on 30 March 1895 in 28 Gartness, Shotts Middle District, Lanarkshire, Scotland 12 21.). The cause of her death was chronic bronchitis over 2 years.10
