  General Notes:

"John White, 30 years, Charlotte White, 30 years, Agnes White, 11 years, Thomas White, 6 years, William White, 2 years, were recorded by the 1841 census for Old Monkland parish living at Calderbank Iron Works. All were recorded as born in Lanarkshire. John worked as an ironstone miner.

The 1851 census recorded John White as born in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire. He was aged 43 years and worked as an iron stone miner. He and his wife Charlotte, aged 44 years and born in Ayrshire, lived with their five children at 42 Stone Row, Calderbank. The children were Thomas White, aged 15 years, William White, aged 11 years, John White, aged 6 years, James White, aged 4 years, and Charlotte White aged 2 years. Thomas, also an iron stone miner along with his brother William, had been born in Shotts parish and his four siblings in Old Monkland.

In 1860 John White was noted as being a "miner" in the marriage certificate of his son William.

The 1861 census for Old Monkland parish recorded John, aged 53 years, and Charlotte White, aged 54 years, living at 22 Dairy Row, Calderbank, with their four children, Thomas, John, James and Charlotte, now 25, 17, 15 and 12 years respectively. John was recorded as born in Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, and worked as an ironstone miner, and Charlotte's birthplace was noted as Maybole, Ayrshire. The four children were recorded as born in Old Monkland parish. Thomas worked as "Stock-taker (iron)", and John and James were coal miners. Charlotte was a scholar.

In his son John's marriage certificate of 1864 John was recorded as an iron miner.

When John White died in 1865 his death certificate recorded him as an "Iron-miner married to Charlotte Hay". His age was noted as 57 years. His father was deceased. 3 4 5 6 8 9

William White, John Wite's son, who was present where his father died, gave notice of the death at Coatdyke on 5 September 1865. 5


John married Charlotte HAY (DNA Linked), daughter of John HAY and Elizabeth WALKER, on 31 December 1833 in Muirkirk parish, Ayrshire, Scotland.1 (Charlotte HAY (DNA Linked) was born about 1807 in St Quivox Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland 3 4 6 and died on 1 December 1868 in Square, Woodhall, Old Monkland parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland 11.). The cause of her death was Dropsy over 7 weeks.5

There is also a record in Shotts parish register in Lanarkshire of what is probably the banns of marriage dated 8 December 1833. 1
